Geology of Mountain Belts

Period: first semester

Course Units Contents:

  • Analysis of the structure of the orogenic belts from the tectonic, petrological, morphological and geophysical point of view.
  • Focus on the Mediterranean belts and kinematics, by analyzing the spatial and chronological relations between e.g., Alps, Dinarides, Hellenides, Apennine, Pyrenees, Betic belt, Sierra Nevada, Atlantis, Caucasus and Himalaya Mesozoic-Cenozoic chains.
  • Comparison with other world Phanerozoic chains.
  • Notes on the geological hazard in the Alps.
  • Analyses of various serial geological sections through different parts of an orogeny with the help of geological digital maps, orthophotos, thematic maps and seismic profiles.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods: 

Lectures given by experts on particular topics.

  • Acquisition and study of presentations (power points) and publications provided by the teacher in the Moodle. 
  • Reading and critical commentary of scientific publications.
  • Analysis of geographic, structural, digital maps and geological profiles and other material (from CAB and websites) by groups of 2-4 students, aimed at the realization of geological profiles through the belts.
  • Geological excursion in the Alps.
