By superimposing the hydrographic network, natural and artificial, to the road and railway network the number of intersections that must be managed in order to ensure the continuity of the latter is enormous. This continuity must be guaranteed above all in emergency conditions, such as those that occur during catastrophic phenomena, including river floods, when the efficiency of the infrastructures becomes fundamental to ensure the mobility of the rescue and guarantee the path for the evacuation of the inhabitants at risk.
Moreover highway hydraulic structures perform the vital function of conveying, diverting, or removing surface water from the highway right-of-way. One type of drainage facility will rarely provide the most satisfactory drainage for all sections of a highway. Therefore, the designer should know and understand how different drainage facilities can be integrated to provide complete drainage control.
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to understand the hydraulic and constructive aspects dealing with the drainage of roads and bridge decks, and the intersections between road and hydrographic network by use of methods, tools and techniques up-to-date. At the end of the course the student will be able to manage the different aspects that concur to the design of that works and to represent the result by use of suitable technical reports and graphical tables.
