Structural design

At the end of the course the student will know the fundamentals of structural design with particular reference to: structural safety, limit states, structural behaviour of reinforced concrete elements, ultimate limit state and service limit state verifications, design of steel structures. The student will be able to calculate simple static schemes of two-dimensional structures and to perform the main safety checks required by the guidelines.

The course has the following structure:

• Sustainability of steel structures: steel material, construction life cycle, mechanical properties of steel, productions of steel elements, cross sections of beams and columns, advantage of using steel material, steel recycling

• Flexibility of steel: configuration of steel structures, frames and braced systems, behaviour related to stability, level of continuity related to beam-column joints

• Design of steel components: principles for steel cross-sections design, classification of steel cross- sections referred to Eurocode 3, steel elements subjected to tension, steel elements subjected to compression, steel elements subjected to bending moment (deflection); steel elements subjected to shear

• Buckling in steel structures: length, failure mechanism for steel structures, buckling strength, strength and buckling verifications referred to Eurocode 3, flexural-torsional buckling

• Joints in steel structures: examples of bolted joints, bolted joints principal components, classification of bolted joints, shear bolted joints and prestressed bolted joints, calculation of the forces on the shear

• Bolted joints

• Examples of welded joints, types of welded joints (butt welds and fillet welds), defects of welded joints, principal stresses acting on a fillet weld, calculation of stresses for the principal typologies of tensile welded joints, calculation of stresses for welded joints subjected to shear and flexure, calculation of stresses for welded joints subjected to shear and torsion.
