The course will to explore the sense(s) and content(s) of the citizenship idea not only in the classical sense of the belonging of the individual subject to a state, but also in the meaning the term has acquired beyond, and against, the reference to a nationally-defined context. The main theories of citizenship will be introduced, with a focus on the shifting of the meaning and of the boundaries of the citizenship idea. The specificity of European citizenship with respect to national citizenships will be considered (as it breaks the classical connection between nationality and citizenship).
